Titanium Verification

Our Titanium Standard

What Is ASTM F136 Titanium?

ASTM F136 is an internationally recognised material standard published by ASTM International that defines the chemical composition and mechanical properties required of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) intended for surgical implant applications. The "ELI" designation — Extra Low Interstitial — means the alloy is held to tighter limits on oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and iron content compared to standard-grade titanium alloys, resulting in a highly biocompatible metal widely used in medical and body-modification contexts.

Key properties of ASTM F136 titanium include:

  • Biocompatibility – low reactivity with human tissue, making it well-tolerated in long-term contact with the body
  • Corrosion resistance – naturally forms a stable oxide layer that resists degradation from moisture and body fluids
  • No nickel content – unlike many steel alloys, ASTM F136 titanium contains no nickel, which is a common contact allergen
  • Lightweight durability – excellent strength-to-weight ratio

Titanova's Material Commitment

All Titanova piercing jewelry described as implant-grade titanium is sourced from suppliers who provide titanium meeting the ASTM F136 specification. We specify this standard when sourcing materials because it is the benchmark most widely referenced by professional piercing associations for body jewelry intended for initial piercings and long-term wear.

Available Documentation

Material traceability in body jewelry manufacturing typically takes the form of mill certificates (also called material test reports or MTRs) issued by the metal mill that produced the titanium stock. These certificates confirm the chemical composition and mechanical test results for a specific production lot.

Titanova can, upon request, share the mill certificate or lot documentation we hold for a specific product where that documentation is available from our supplier. Please be aware of the following:

  • Documentation availability varies by product and batch; not every item in our range has a certificate we can share directly.
  • Mill certificates confirm the material standard of the raw stock, not the finished jewelry piece.
  • We do not make medical claims or guarantee specific health outcomes in relation to our materials.

How to Request Documentation

If you would like to request a mill certificate or lot reference for a specific Titanova product, please contact us and include the following information:

  • The exact product name and variant (e.g., size, colour, threading)
  • Your order number, if you have already purchased the item
  • A brief description of why the documentation is needed

We will do our best to locate and provide the relevant documentation for your enquiry. Requests are handled on a case-by-case basis and response times may vary.
